The first of Sky’s Monday night Super League fixtures this season should be a cracker, as reigning champs Leeds Rhinos host St Helens at Headingley.

Saturday May 18
Channel 4 and Racing UK 3.50pm

Sheikh Mohammed and his troubled Godolphin stables continue to operate under the cloud of Mahmood Al Zarooni’s doping shame, but the yard of alternative trainer Saeed bin Suroor remains open for business – and Saturday’s Lockinge Stakes at Newbury gives the famous royal blue silks a welcome chance to make the news for the right reasons.

MotoGP: Monster Energy Grand Prix de France

Sunday May 19
Le Mans
BBC Two 1pm

Defending MotoGP champion Jorge Lorenzo reacted angrily to being barged out of second place on the last corner of the last race by a young upstart. In truth, he’s in danger of being shoved out of the limelight altogether by the talented debutant Marc Marquez.

Main image (Background Landscape) :

Friday May 10
Qatar SC Stadium, 3.25pm

These are troubled times for the Diamond League. The IAAF's flagship series of elite meetings kicks off in Doha today (Friday), but at the time of writing no headline sponsor had been found to replace the recently departed Samsung, and there was no evidence as to whether the event would even be screened live anywhere in the UK.

Aviva Premiership Semi Final: Leicester v Harlequins

Main image (Background Landscape) :

Joe Marler and Mike Brown will both feel hard done by for not making the recently named Lions squad, but it's Harlequins and England duo Chris Robshaw and Danny Care (pictured) whose exclusions were the real surprise.

While injury forced Robshaw to watch last week's regular-season closer against Northampton from the sidelines, Care – since named RPA Player of the Season – put in a man-of-the-match performance to show Warren Gatland just what he's missing.

Football: Europa League final

Main image (Background Landscape) :

Wednesday May 15
Chelsea v Benfica
Amsterdam ArenA
ITV 7.45pm

In a turbulent season of transition, Thursdays have become nights of solace at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea's European home record, unblemished by defeat since 2011, was not enough to defend their Champions League title.

Snooker: World Championship Final

Sunday May 5
The Crucible, Sheffield
BBC Two 2pm

On Thanksgiving, families across the United States come together to watch American Football. It’s a time of togetherness, of celebration and of elite athletes competing at the highest level of sport.

It’s much the same here in Blighty over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend, when families across the nation ignore each other in favour of a darkened room and television featuring two besuited men walking around a table with a stick.
