Football: Sweden v England
Wednesday November 14
Christmas may still be 46 days away, but on Wednesday Sweden will be pulling the gift-wrap off their brand new national stadium, the nauseatingly named Friends Arena, to welcome England in the inaugural game, an international friendly.
Appropriately, given the name of the venue, the two countries have been well acquainted in the past few years – most recently at Euro 2012, when a 3-2 England victory was secured by Danny Welbeck’s sensational backheel pirouette (above).
With England’s next competitive fixture not until March (against San Marino, so we use the word ‘competitive’ loosely), it gives Roy Hodgson an opportunity to experiment. Welbeck is prime among the candidates for inclusion, but alot of eyes will also be on Crystal Palace starlet Wilfried Zaha. Will the striker-come-winger get his chance to impress in the white shirt? And if he scores, how over the top will the press go about him? We wait with baited breath...
